Moonrise in the Twilight

Abstract Landscape – Salton Trough

Abstract Landscape - Sea of Cortez

Flowing sand and water moves in waves and rivulets across the Salton Trough toward the Sea of Cortez, meeting the Gulf of California at the Colorado River Delta. Every twisted line and wave, created in response to the rhythmic motion of the desert’s breathing…sand and salt, sea and rain, swirling and rippling with the ebb and flow of time.

Passive Approach

As If Approaching Another World

As if approaching another world, out of the desert we see bright points of light that radiate across circular fields of reflectors, their intensity shifting with the angle of the sun and our motion across the desert. Beyond these solar collectors, we find fields of panels passively absorbing the energy of the sun in the depths of the black sheen of their smooth faces. Clean energy from the emptiness of the desert. It may not be cost effective or efficient yet, but it serves as an inspiration…a sign of what may be possible with imagination.

Abstract Landscape – Painted Desert Scattering

Abstract Landscape - Painted Desert Scattering

To the lovely woman who stopped by the cockpit to ask about the sights we passed over on our way to Los Angeles: Yes, it was a beautiful day to fly. Thank you for looking out your window and sharing your joy over the passing sights. The Painted Desert was crisp and colorful, even through the airplane windows. Not everyone takes an interest in where we are and where we are going, taking in the sights with the fascination and joy of a child…but you and I share that distinction. The next time I sit in the cabin and wonder at all the drawn window shades and bored expressions, I will think of you. I’m glad to know you are out there, forgetting where your feet are and simply enjoying the view.

Salt and Reflection

Reflecting on Salt Lake

Skirting south of Provo, Utah, scattered clouds reflect on the glasslike surface of Utah Lake lake…The white of salted earth flows southward from the lake into the farm lands beyond.

Branching Out

Branching Out - Little Colorado

No matter how grand a path we have carved for ourselves, there comes a time when we must forget our past, branching out or connecting, to make something new and extraordinary…The Colorado River branches out of the Grand Canyon, interconnecting with the Little Colorado, multiplying their grandeur at their union.

A Cross City Dawn

Cross City Dawn

The light of dawn strikes the cloud deck beneath us that shrouds Cross City, casting an orange glow on each cloud face against a fading indigo backdrop. A momentary reality of mountains, peaks and valleys crafted from the froth of cloud cover possessing of the colorful starkness of a desert yet vanishing into dimensionless daylight like so many passing dreams.

Abstract Landscape: Power Line

Powerline

Across a level stretch of New Mexico desert, a line of wind turbines sits momentarily motionless, their shadows connecting the dots of this wireless power line.

Stand by for Rolls

Rolling Weather

A sideways look at the weather rolling through an otherwise quiet Missouri morning reveals a scene reminiscent of rising swells upon the sea. We stand by for rolls as the roiling energy sends waves of turbulence into the clear skies above.

Fortuitous Vectors

Boom Over the Desert

Boom in the Desert

As if some great floating atmospheric boom, this twisted fat ribbon of cloud traps the flow of the moist coastal breeze, constraining our view of the desert beyond Victorville as it follows the sandy curve of the Mojave River toward the San Bernardino National Forest.

Rounding the Front Range

Abstract Landscape: Bryce Canyon

Abstract Landscape- Bryce Canyon

Rock formations along Bryce Canyon cast jagged shadows in purple hues on the vertical faces of the canyon walls beneath. As this palisade is revealed by the effects of time and erosion, a grand complexity is exposed. No herculean construction effort could equal the majesty of these rocks. The mountains put forth no effort to create these monuments, they exist and the way washes over them to reveal the beauty hidden within. Less is more.

In Transition

In Transition

In transition from the mountains of the front range to the desert of eastern New Mexico, gradually tumbling cumulus clouds slowly align and drift across the plains in a solid mass.

Radiant Shadows

Mexican Landscape-Brocken Spectre

Casting shadows in the early morning light over central Mexico…Our Brocken Spectre is cast upon the terrain and mountain ridges apparently illuminate and reflect light from out of the shadows as the spectre’s aura radiates. The full moon balances the scene, watching the phenomenon from its station above the horizon.

Abstract Landscape: A Flourish on the Desert

Abstract Landscape- A Flourish on the Desert Floor

Perspective means everything…as the highway passes through the middle of this New Mexico scene, we can imagine the view from a passing car…barren, dry, flat, and uninspiring…Yet when we gaze upon the planet from above, we are blessed with a creative perspective and we see the intricate pattern of a grand flourish upon the desert that has been engraved by water and wind in desert hues.

Abstract Landscape: Stone Fluidity

San Juan River - Etched Ridges

The San Juan River flows out of Mexican Hat into the canyons where years of flowing wind and water have etched layers of stone fluidity onto the face of the Utah Desert.

Dawn on the Sea Above

Over a following sea of rolling vapor, glancing rays of sunlight illuminate the aerial horizon as night melts away from the sky above a waking Virginia.

Ridges in the Dust

Sierra Madre Oriental - Ridges in the Dust

Like the rise and fall of whales’ backs upon the ocean, the ridges of the Sierra Madre Oriental arch out of the dust, broaching the aerial horizon before vanishing again beneath the hazy atmosphere.

Light Streams In

Light on the Kaibob

Over the Kaibob National Forest, sunset plays with perforations in the overcast and the light streams in, illuminating the Arizona hills with columns of orange dusted heaven.
