Forget where your feet are and simply enjoy the view.

Deep into twilight as we drive into the Great Basin, the partially illuminated ridges divide the growing shadows and mark our pace across the landscape and we watch the last flicker of light atop Wheeler Peak in the Great Basin National Park.

Watching the sunset from earth, we are spectators viewing a show of lights painted on a one dimensional sky. Moving through the atmosphere above, we gain a different perspective as we are surrounded by the illuminated particles that fill the space in between the earth and heavens. We are immersed in the event and the emotion of the moment washes over us with the subtlety of a building static charge.

On the face of Cedar Breaks National Monument, the earth is exposed in a manner that reveals its complex character and colorful soul. The rocky outcroppings appear as wrinkles and crags that draw our attention closer as if to study an incomprehensible facial expression, only to become entranced as our eyes trace its irregular patterns as if wandering through the channels of some vast visual labyrinth.

Near Pawnee City, Nebraska, amid neatly measured and clearly defined farms, the moire of the earth’s fabric shimmers through the tamed landscape to reveal slopes and grooves of a vanished landscape.

As we cruise south of the junction between Marble Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and the Little Colorado, a forest fire on the Kaibob Plateau obscures the horizon. The smoke provides a backdrop and limits the depth of our field of view.

Sometimes we become so accustomed to seeing a place, or a thing, or a person in a certain way that when we approach them from another direction they are nearly unrecognizable…yet warm, inviting, and familiar. As we approach Zion from the north, it’s back door, the colors and shapes all feel familiar but the change in perspective challenges our senses and presents us with a new experience.

As we move through the atmosphere…we bask in the warmth of an evening sun above the cloud tops while the earth beneath is shrouded in darkness…gradually, we move toward the heart of the storm, passing through layers of cloud illuminated by a descending sun…in a moment of utter stillness, a silent vision, we encounter an iridescent glow that illuminates the desert landscape beneath us, the cloudscape above us, and the air around us…and we are filled with anticipation for the coming storm until the moment that we penetrate its edge and plunge into turbulent darkness.

San Gorgonio Mountain stands illuminated beyond Big Bear, its brightness diminishing the surrounding Southern California haze.

As sunset bathes the coast of California in warm pink light, Yosemite fades into twilight and a radiant Mono Lake seems to float in rising the darkness.

As the hazy light of the setting sun washes over the Great Salt Lake, Lake Utah, and the mountains in between, we find ourselves in a dream and sorting through the visual emotions of what is earth, water, and sky. A sombre evening over the Great Basin.

The fires on top of Aztec Peak near Phoenix, Arizona send smoke aloft that seems to consume the atmosphere.

In a swirl of violent elegance, summer arrives in the troposphere above the eastern seaboard.

Searching for inspiration amid a dense field of inspirational sights…a distraction, a meditation, the jumbled vision of an earthly prayer. As we pass over Yosemite, we yearn for a singularly inspiring view, but like the jumble of words that flood our minds when we focus our thoughts on a single wish or desire, our narrow vision is overwhelmed by the grandeur of whole scene. Gradually we sort through the individual ideas and follow clues in the landscape that bring us clarity. Eventually, Half Dome and her friends emerge from this sea of stone for our delight.

We ascend through a canyon of cloud, out of darkness, into the morning light. The moment of transition through the dark senseless blur of cloud into the textured roiling cloud tops illuminated by the advancing dawn…this is the most exhilarating moment.

The waves of earth rolling off of Capitol Reef create a sense of motion in the stoic landscape.

In the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, south of Los Mochis, La Pressa meets the sea of Cortez like a swirl of paint on water. Various shades of green, yellow, and brown mix in streaks and flows of wonderful abstraction.

As we emerge from the Chihuahuan Desert and cross into southwest Texas, the landscape scrambles and spreads through a once and sometimes river southwest of Fort Stockton, deeply etching its abstract fractal pattern in the earth beneath us.

Crossing over the Kabob National Forest, the sun descending upon the horizon, the details of the rocky outcroppings slowly vanish, consumed by the sunset.

What appears a straight line path is often fraught with turbulent meanderings, unseen from afar but unsettling to our experience…not to worry, there is beauty in the chaos…it’s simply of sign of moving forward. A path without turbulence is life without experience.

As a spring storm descends on Richmond, Virginia, the city illuminates the towering form from beneath…the perspective reminds us that while we may feel as though we are hiding in the darkness, we may still be lighting the way for others unseen to navigate through the storm.
